"Strawberries Bella and Ida at the Table" by Marc Chagall.

This is an art piece where the presentation is already catching my eye. Presented at eye value, we can see a woman looking down at three plates of strawberries while wearing a dress that matches the redness of the strawberries. Strawberries when they are presented in artwork are a symbol of purity and honor. They are described as the "perfect fruit" and can also symbolize a virgin. But this isn't the only meaning, it can also represent dangerous and fleeting pleasures due to the strawberry having many seeds, which can represent promiscuity. Depending on the context of the painting, strawberries can either represent a darker sensual meaning or a more lighthearted and pure meaning.

⋆.ೃ࿔*:・ ABOUT THE ARTWORK
It currently needs to be discovered where exactly this painting resides since it is in a private collection. The painting is made of oil and was created in 1916. Despite talking about strawberries might mean something sensual or pleasurable, that doesn't seem to be the vibe from this painting. The woman included is looking down at the strawberries with a small smile on her face. She is wearing a dress that looks modest, but it compliments the bright colors of the strawberries as well as the color of her chair. One thing I noticed is in the background, there is something that looks like a doll on a chair, and dolls are typically used and played with by children, which gives it more of the illusion that this painting represents more of a pure and lighthearted meaning. There is a repetition of dots on the painting that represents the strawberries, instead of taking more time to paint each individual strawberry. I personally think it's a smart topic because despite the strawberries not having much detail, the viewer can still tell that it is the strawberries the woman is looking at. The painting gives off a cozy and relaxing feeling, the subject showing a woman looking down at strawberries, and strawberries are a refreshing fruit that many people enjoy.

Here is a link that talks more about the meaning of strawberries presented in artwork. Here is another link, and I find it fascinating that strawberries can have so many meanings. It's a beautiful fruit.

  1. The bright red color depicted directly in the center of this work draws the eye. The colors surrounding the woman and the strawberries are bland, and I'm sure this was deliberate on the artist's part. You say you believe there may be a doll in the chair in the background, but to me it looks more like an infant in a highchair wearing a bib. I believe this may be a mother that has picked platefuls of wild strawberries and has come inside to enjoy the treat. The infants face turned towards its mother makes me think she is soon to feed the child, but the mother needed a quick break to grab a snack. The work doesn't strike me as promiscuous, but rather a glimpse into motherhood and being able to take a quick break for themselves every once in a while.
